A latitudinal gradient of seasonal temperature variation recorded in oyster shells from the coastal waters of France and The Netherlands ArchiMer
Lartaud, Franck; Emmanuel, Laurent; De Rafelis, Marc; Ropert, Michel; Labourdette, Nathalie; Richardson, Christopher A.; Renard, Maurice.
Cathodoluminescence (CL) microscopy of the foliated calcite shell hinge sections of live-collected oyster Crassostrea gigas collected at seven locations along a latitudinal gradient from the Netherlands in the North Sea to the Atlantic coast of France, revealed variations in luminescence that were attributable to seasonal variations in calcification of the hinge. Photomicrographs of hinge sections and luminescence profiles were analyzed to define a micro-sampling strategy that was adopted to drill the hinge samples to determine their isotopic composition. Reconstructed seasonal seawater temperatures determined from the stable oxygen isotope (delta O-18) composition along growth profiles from 32 oyster shell hinges showed distinct seasonal isotopic cycles...

A Reserve-Balancing Pool for Services by Dairy Cooperatives AgEcon
Ling, K. Charles.
The rationale for compensating dairy cooperatives for the costs incurred in balancing milk supply for the fluid market is examined. A reserve-balancing pool is proposed to facilitate deducting supply-balancing service credit from a marketwide producer pool and making payment to cooperatives for providing the services. The volume of necessary reserves maintained for the fluid market determines the size of the reserve-balancing pool. A dairy cooperative qualifies for pool payment based on the volume of milk delivered for fluid uses and on the volume of necessary reserves actually balanced. An alternative qualification is to allocate the volume of necessary reserves each cooperative has to balance according to a cooperative's market share of milk for fluid...

Abundance and length structure of Brycon nattereri (Osteichthyes, Bryconidae), an endangered fish species in central Brazil Biological Sciences
Vitorino Júnior, Oscar Barroso; Lopes, Kelven Stella; Pelicice, Fernando Mayer.
Brycon nattereri is a threatened fish species restricted to small headwater rivers of the Paraná, São Francisco and Tocantins rivers. This species has been extirpated from many sites, and little is known about its ecology. In this sense, the present study investigated temporal variations in the occurrence, abundance and length structure of B. nattereri in the Dois Irmãos river, a small headwater river from the Tocantins river basin. Samples were taken monthly between January and November of 2009 and 2010. The studied site comprised a 4.5 km river stretch, sampled with an active fishing method (fly fishing). Individuals caught were counted, measured and returned immediately to the river. We caught 302 individuals along two years. Brycon nattereri was...

AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DEMAND FOR WHOLESALE PORK PRIMALS: SEASONALITY AND STRUCTURAL CHANGE AgEcon
Parcell, Joseph L..
A set of inverse wholesale pork primal demand models were estimated to estimate wholesale pork primal own-quantity flexibility's, to determine seasonal price fluctuations, and to examine whether the flexibility's have changed in absolute magnitude over time. Results of this analysis indicate that there is the own-quantity flexibility for some primals differences by season with in the year. Additionally, it was determined that the own-quantity flexibility increased in magnitude (absolute value) over time for some of the primal cuts evaluated here. However, for Hams and Boston Butt the own-flexibility was either unchanged or increased over the period analyzed. Increased cold storage stocks for these primals may have been used to offset the price decline of...

An Empirical Analysis of the Demand for Wholesale Pork Primals: Seasonality and Structural Change AgEcon
Parcell, Joseph L..
This study focuses on estimating wholesale pork primal demand relationships in order to determine their own-quantity flexibilities, whether these flexibilities have changed over time, and seasonal price fluctuations. A set of equations for pork loin, rib, butt, ham, pork belly, and picnic primals was estimated. Monthly data over an 11-year period were used to determine that own-quantity flexibilities varied across months, that they increased in absolute value over time for some primal cuts, and cold-storage stocks were used as an inventory control measure to reduce price variation for some primal cuts.

AN EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE FLORIDA COOPERATIVE'S SEASONAL PRICING PLAN ON SEASONAL PRODUCTION VARIABILITY AgEcon
Washington, Andrew A.; Lawson, Robert W., Jr.; Kilmer, Richard L..
From 1993 - 1995, Florida dairy cooperatives implemented a seasonal pricing plan in an attempt to decrease the variability in seasonal production. Farmers that participated in the seasonal pricing plan were able to reduce seasonality in each year when compared to 1992 by as much as 20 percent. For farmers that did not participate, seasonality increased in each year by as much as 32 percent. Overall, the seasonal pricing plan was effective in reducing seasonality for those farmers that chose to participate in the plan and that its limited short-run success was the result of seasonality increases by non-participating farms.

ANÁLISE DA ESTACIONALIDADE DE PREÇOS DA MAMONA NO PARANÁ AgEcon
Silva, Gerson Henrique Da; Esperancini, Maura Seiko Tsutsui; Melo, Carmen Ozana De; Bueno, Osmar De Carvalho.

Annual characteristics of estrous activity in wool and hair ewe lambs under subtropical conditions Scientia Agricola
Rodrigues,Paula de Almeida; Coelho,Lia de Alencar; Nonaka,Keico Okino; Sasa,Aya; Vicente,Wilter Ricardo Russiano; Balieiro,Júlio César de Carvalho; Siqueira,Edson Ramos de.
The increased emphasis placed on lamb production in Brazil points to the need for a better knowledge of the annual pattern of reproductive activity in ewe lambs. This study evaluates the annual estrous activity pattern of hair and wool ewe lambs raised in southeast Brazil. Estrous characteristics were recorded for 12 months in ten Santa Inês and 21 Romney Marsh and Suffolk ewe lambs. Santa Inês ewe lambs exhibited a greater length of the normal estrous cycle (14 to 19 days) than Romney Marsh and Suffolk ewe lambs (17.0 ± 0.1 days vs. 16.5 ± 0.2 and 15.9 ± 0.2 days). All the ewe lambs presented a greater number of periods of estrus per animal per month for single estrous cycles (up to 26 days) during autumn and winter. During spring and summer there was a...

Antarctic icebergs: A significant natural ocean sound source in the Southern Hemisphere ArchiMer
Matsumoto, Haru; Bohnenstiehl, Delwayne R.; Tournadre, Jean; Dziak, Robert P.; Haxel, Joseph H.; Lau, T. -k. A.; Fowler, Matt; Salo, Sigrid A..
In late 2007, two massive icebergs, C19a and B15a, drifted into open water and slowly disintegrated in the southernmost Pacific Ocean. Archived acoustic records show that the high-intensity underwater sounds accompanying this breakup increased ocean noise levels at mid-to-equatorial latitudes over a period of ∼1.5 years. More typically, seasonal variations in ocean noise, which are characterized by austral summer-highs and winter-lows, appear to be modulated by the annual cycle of Antarctic iceberg drift and subsequent disintegration. This seasonal pattern is observed in all three Oceans of the Southern Hemisphere. The life cycle of Antarctic icebergs affects not only marine ecosystem but also the sound environment in far-reaching areas and must be...

Are Hospitals Seasonally Inefficient? Evidence from Washington State Hospitals AgEcon
Friesner, Daniel L.; McPherson, Matthew Q.; Rosenman, Robert.
Efficiency measurement has been one of the most extensively explored areas of health services research over the past two decades. Despite this attention, few studies have examined whether a provider’s efficiency varies on a monthly, quarterly or other, sub-annual basis. This paper presents an empirical study that looks for evidence of seasonal inefficiency. Using a quarterly panel of general, acute-care hospitals from Washington State, we find that hospital efficiency does vary over time; however, the nature of this dynamic inefficiency depends on the type of efficiency being measured. Our results suggest that technical and cost efficiency vary by quarter. Allocative and scale efficiency also vary on a quarterly basis, but only if the data are jointly...

Association between AA-NAT gene polymorphism and reproductive performance in sheep Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Ding-ping,Bai; Cheng-jiang,Yu; Yu-lin,Chen.
Arylalkylamine N-acetyltransferase (AA-NAT) is critical enzyme in Melatonin (MLT) biosynthesis for MLT regulating the animal seasonal breeding. In this study, DNA sequencing methods were applied to detect the polymorphisms of the AA-NAT gene in 179 Chinese sheep belonging to two non-seasonal reproduction breeds and two seasonal reproduction breeds. One mutation at exon 3 (NM_001009461:c.486A > G) was firstly described at the sheep AA-NAT locus. Hence, we described the SmaI PCR-RFLP method for detecting EX3 486A > G mutation, frequencies of the AA-NAT-G allele varied from 0.871 to 0.908 in two non-seasonal reproduction breeds and 0.517 to 0.578 in two seasonal reproduction breeds. The associations of SmaI polymorphism with estrus...

Atividade reprodutiva de Scinax rizibilis (Bokermann) (Anura, Hylidae) na Floresta Atlântica, sudeste do Brasil Zoologia
Bastos,Rogério P; Haddad,Célio F. B.
The breeding activity of Scinax rizibilis (Bokermann, 1964) was observed in a temporary pond, in the municipality of Ribeirão Branco, in the Southern São Paulo State from February 1993 to January 1994 and November 1994 to February 1995. The reproductive season extended from September to February. Females were larger and heavier (after oviposition) than males. In the choras, the spatial distribution tended towards uniformity. The number of males and females in the chorus was positively correlated. However there was no correlation between the number of males and the estimation of the operational sex ratios. On average there were seven males for each female present in the chorus. The males were apparently selected by females.

The limited availability of high-resolution continuous archives, insufficient chronological control, and complex hydro-climatic forcing mechanisms lead to many uncertainties in palaeo-hydrological reconstructions for the Western Mediterranean. In this study we present a newly recovered 19.63 m long core from Lake Sidi Ali in the North African Middle Atlas, a transition zone of Atlantic, Western Mediterranean and Saharan air mass trajectories. With a multi-proxy approach based on magnetic susceptibility, carbonate and total organic C content: core-scanning and quantitative XRF, stable isotopes of ostracod shells, charcoal counts, Cedrus pollen abundance, and a first set of diatom data, we reconstruct Western Mediterranean hydro-climatic variability,...

Beef cattle performance on signal grass pastures deferred and fertilized with nitrogen Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Amorim,P.L.; Fonseca,D.M.; Santos,M.E.R.; Pimentel,R.M.; Rodrigues,J.P.P.; Chizzotti,F.H.M.; Vitor,C.G..
ABSTRACT The effect of four nitrogen levels (0, 40, 80 and 120kg N ha-1), applied before deferment on the beef cattle production and structural variables on Urochloa decumbens (signal grass) were assessed from January to October 2012 and from January to September 2013. A randomized block design with three replicates was adopted, in an arrangement of repeated measures in time (grazing period). An interaction effect between nitrogen level and grazing period was observed on extended-plant height and herbage mass. As the nitrogen levels were increased, extended-plant height, herbage mass, total herbage allowance, and efficiency of conversion of fertilizer into herbage were increased. Throughout the grazing period, pasture height, extended-plant height,...
